reducing barriers to better lives

Riverside in the community

Riverside Pupils are encouraged to engage with partners in the community . We have been fortunate to have a regular fun day organised for us by Nationwide where the focus is on team building and social development . We have also been visited by a representative of Guide Dogs for the Blind who talked to us about the needs and development of a guide dog . The Mayor of Swindon paid us a visit , although finding a space for his car was tricky , and talked to us about his duties and responsibilities in the town . A visit to Council Chambers is planned for later this year. We regularly visit the Fresh Air Exhibition so that our artists can be inspired and are looking forward to seeing what they have on display later this year . Riverside is fortunate to have excellent links with outside agencies and we have had talks from LGBT coordinators , PCSO’s and the Fire Arms Team to broaden our understanding and involvement in community issues.

Pupil Council

Riverside Pupil Council is held every two weeks and is chaired by one of our pupils . They discuss issues related to school life and are consulted over new policies that affect them , where appropriate . Pupils have been consulted over the wording of the ILP documentation and how this information was to be presented for use on a daily basis .

There is an emphasis on pupil engagement and fund raising and so far this year the pupils have raised money for Macmillon Cancer Research and Comic Relief through cake sales and fun activities.

Pupil Council was also the driving force behind providing additional breaktime activities leading to the purchase of two new, all weather , table tennis tables which are proving very popular .

Rewards and Sanctions

Riverside has a clearly set out , incentivised , reward program and a uniformly adopted behaviour policy . This helps us to encourage attitudinal progress and, therefore, academic progress. Rewards are given termly based at three levels : In Form Groups ; via progress – attitudinally or academically and by attendance linked to effort . No pupil is precluded from the award system.
