reducing barriers to better lives

The Fernbrook Centre

Head of Centre's Welcome

A very warm welcome to The Fernbrook Centre.

This centre has been set up to offer a full time education for pupils who, for a variety of reasons, have not flourished in mainstream schools.  The young people may have a range of social, emotional, behavioural and/or learning difficulties that often impair their ability to take part in sustained and active learning.  The Centre’s first priority, therefore, is to enable pupils to re-engage in the process of education and learning and return them to school or support them towards their next destination.

This is what we are good at and we pride ourselves at The Fernbrook in developing personalised learning programmes to meet individual needs.  We believe all pupils deserve a fresh start and therefore offer a range of programmes and recognised level 1 & 2 qualifications, which are delivered in small groups or 1-1 to try to break the cycle of poor attendance and attitudes to learning.  As well as committed teachers, who have many years of experience in working at the Centre, we have a brilliant support network of Teaching Assistants whose sole aim it is to ensure that all pupils reach their full potential and have an equal opportunity to take part in all the different aspects of the personalised curriculum.  The Fernbrook Centre is a short term provision and our ultimate goal is to facilitate a return to mainstream schooling or, with the support of an Education Health and Care Plan, to help young people in their transition to a Specialist more permanent provision.

Warm regards,

Esther Keller

The Fernbrook Centre provides an alternative education for secondary KS3 and KS4 pupils who have been permanently excluded from mainstream schools. They have come to us for a period of support before going back to a mainstream school or moving on to a more suitable school placement. Our highly trained staff provide intensive support in the development of the students social, behavioural and academic skills to maximise their opportunities to return to mainstream school at the earliest opportunity.

Student progress is underpinned by the Centre’s ethos of celebrating positive outcomes alongside dedicated professional staff, small class sizes and a vibrant reward system.

"[My child] has come a long way, he works hard at school and no longer comes home frustrated, due to the amazing provision the staff have put in place for him" - Parent
